Yates Center is home to the annual Hay Capital BBQ Cook-off & Motorcycle Show held in conjunction with Mardi Grass, a rural heritage celebration. These events are held in July. The BBQ cook-off is a KCBS sanctioned event. 2009 was host to 40+ teams competing for cash, prizes, and braggin' rights.

The Woodson County fairgrounds are overflowing with 4-H-ers the last full week of July. The multi-day fair culminates with awards for many young participants who have spent all year working toward their goals.

Toronto

Toronto is located south and west of Yates Center off U.S. Highway 54, in the Flint Hills region of southeast Kansas.

Toronto Lake and Cross-Timbers State Park draw many to the area for outdoor recreation as well as research of the ancient cross-timbers forest.

Piqua

Piqua is situated just north of U.S. Highway 54 east of Yates Center. A large grain elevator notes the nearby rural community.

Piqua is also the birthplace of Buster Keaton (known as the "Great Stone Face" of comedy, was a star of vaudeville, silent movies, and later "talkies") and is home to the Buster Keaton Museum. The historic St. Michael's Catholic Church is also located in Piqua.

Neosho Falls

Neosho Falls is a small (unincorporated) rural community on the Neosho River. The Neosho Bean Feed is held annually in the fall.
